the Syrians celebrate Independence Day on the seventeenth of April each year, they remember that distinguished day of 1946, which the Syrian government has established to mark the official ceremony for pulling the occupying French army out of the homeland territories. The joyous songs of women had started everywhere two days before the departure of the last French soldiers from Lattakia port announcing Joy and delight for this event. Syrian flags went up and spring flowers and roses have been scattered over the Syrian soldiers and gendarmes, few at that time, wherever they passed and appeared around the official buildings<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n It was a joyous historical day which gave Independence other meanings besides the meaning of the aimed-for independence, coupled with the celebrating nature of spring. So, its Syrian name is distinguished among the festivals of independence of the rest of the Arab countries. In addition to the meaning of pulling the occupants out of the homeland, the meaning of salvation from tyranny and pride of freedom and dignity of the citizen emerged, as well as the emerging of the new common state of all Syrians<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n The march took a quarter of a century of hard struggle, initiated by the first hero and martyr of Syria Youssef al-Azmeh at Maysaloun in 1920, and concluded by heroes and martyrs of the French bombardment of the Syrian parliament in 1945 and in-between the Great Syrian Revolt and several other revolts in most parts of Syria were included. A series of peaceful struggles, strikes and different protests followed, of which the most famous was the 60 Days Strike as well as the important diplomatic and intellectual contributions of the fathers and patrons of independence that remained a rich legacy from which the national struggle will benefit through all ages<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n So, will the Syrians find themselves free today as they were singing on the day of independence? How will that be achieved in light of the declared state of emergency for forty-seven years, in addition to the all-power intelligence agencies? <\/span>Do the Syrians find their homeland independent and free with the occupation of the Golan Heights that has lasted for forty-three years and there is no open horizon of restoring it through peace or war? Do they find themselves in a state of right and law which the fathers of independence have long worked for, while a security and corrupt state control all the joints of their lives and talking about reforming it has become a repeated comedy? Do the Syrians still have hope of a renewed education that face the future, while their generations have learned to live under the Leading Party and its sleeping Front? <\/span>Do the Syrians still believe in their right to the fundamental freedoms of citizens, while the regime’s prisons are filled with thousands of prisoners of conscience who are free intellectuals and human rights activists? <\/span>Do the Syrians still dream of a Republic, while their state has rivaled monarchies? Do the Syrians still enjoy that national unity which brought their strugglers of all races and sects together and dropped Petty Syrian states and which has trusted the Protestant Christian Fares al-Khoury as President of the Islamic endowment (Waqf<\/span><\/span>)?<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n These were numerous questions and numerous other ones the Syrians must be thinking of today, publicly or privately, especially that they are living discrepancies between their own conditions and the age of entrenched human rights charter and culture of citizenship, in spite of all the challenges and crises facing our world, and of all that can be said to justify their being waived<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Really, Independence Day was a great Syrian event and the culmination of the struggle of twenty-five years.
