Some neighborhoods in Lattakia are still in a critical situation while the siege by security forces continues and the city is cut into separate areas by more than 35 checkpoint, fortified with sand barricades. Among these checkpoints: The checkpoint in Sheikh Daher near Joul Jammal school and others at Raml, Skentouri, Shaab, Boustan al-Samakeh, Ain al-Tamra.
Sand barricades and military vehicles with armed soldiers at Ugarit theater. Armed soldiers and civilians at Batta building in Slaibeh. Armed civilians, soldiers and riot control at Bin Abi in Mashroo’ Slaibeh. Armed civilians at the entrance to Kenbes neighborhood near the boy schools center.
Both Ugarit theater and Joul Jammal school were turned into military/security posts and are being used as detention centers and locations to harass the residents.
Passing cars are being searched at checkpoints especially cars going in and out of Raml. Sometimes cars are denied access to or exit from the neighborhood, forcing the residents to wait outside the neighborhood over night. Access through checkpoints is granted or denied after checking the passengers’ IDs and comparing it to prepared lists of wanted people.
In addition, various intimidating acts are being practiced at checkpoints, such as firing when people shout Allhu Akbar from their houses, personal harassment, and other acts.
The authorities have punished those neighborhoods by denying them various services. They have removed trash containers which rises the risk of spread of disease in areas that are already neglected.
Medicines and medical equipments were confiscated from the clinic in Shaab – which is the only clinic serving the neighborhoods under siege – in order to prevent treatment of people injured during the demonstrations and to force them to go to the National Hospital where they face the risk of detention or medical neglect, a thing that has occurred many times.
